You know this guy is very smart that he pulled this scam off in HAWAII,
rather than in another state like California. Today, most states are VERY
strict about building codes and following submitted plans, and if you
submit building plans then DON’T follow them to the letter you are apt to
pay dearly for it later by the proper authorities! Had he tried this scam
in California I can assure you that he would have paid a stiff fine and
been given X-amount of days to follow his original submitted plans which
required him to build that two-story house and not just the garage. His
failure to do so a second time could mean serving jail time, paying an even
bigger fine and quite possibly having his property seized by the bank
and/or the county. Lucky for him that Hawaiians are a laid-back bunch!

Everything you say makes perfect sense. 1997 I bought a 1-bed flat (same
sq-footage as yours) in Edinburgh, UK, before prices went nuts. To buy the
same property now I’d have to sell a kidney.Stuff that! Still have a
mortgage but it’s much lower than many I know, and if I don’t have money
for renovations then that’s too bad. Our friends come to visit us, not to
see how perfect our homes are x
Thank goodness we all don’t live in California. We can make our dreams
come true with affordable home ownership in a smaller way. The government
doesn’t have to be in all our business.

Thank you for the inspiration, this guy is so cleaver and brave. He didn’t
give up his dream and worked very hard a lot of years until his home
complete. The question he asked over and over all those years is: how can I
get it.
It’s not only the story of getting a house it’s an example of getting
anything you want. If you really want something it is your challange to
make it happen even if everebody around you tell you it’s imposible and you
are crazy to think different and live different. this guy is a real hero
because he followed his dream.
