The number of Americans filing new claims for out of work benefits rose recently, but the trend continued to point to an enhancing labor market.

U.S. customer spending barely rebounded in January as households appeared to continue holding back on discretionary spending, recommending financial growth was slow at the start of the very first quarter. The Commerce Department said on Thursday retail sales excluding automobiles, gas, building materials and food services edged up 0.1 percent last month after a revised 0.3 percent drop in December. The so-called core retail sales correspond most carefully with the consumer spending element of gdp. The boost in core retail sales was less than economists’ expectations for a 0.4 percent gain.
