question, I leased a horse summer of 2012 and in the second month of
leasing the horse pulled a shoe and did a lot of damage to his hoof, so I
couldn’t ride for most of that month, and I only paid his owner for half a
month’s lease, and then later on in November the horse had a similar injury
right after Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast. November would have been
the last month of the lease, and I only wanted to pay half the lease since
I would only be riding the horse for two weeks, but his owner flipped out
and raved at me. Just wondering if what I did was wrong? It was a very
informal lease, month-to-month payments, no contract signed.

My grandma almost leased a horse (pony) I’ve been riding for a while now
and we have a special bond but she got spooked and bolted and bucked and
now I have a broken shoulder and I cant ride for a long time and my grandma
doesn’t want to lease anymore but I still want to. What should I do?

+Dallas6101 You should always have a contract set out and signed when
taking part in a lease to avoid issues like this. Even so, a spoken
agreement can still be considered a “contract”, so if you said you would
pay x amount of dollars every month, than you have agreed to pay x amount
of month. In a lease you are basically owning or half owning a horse
(depending on whether its a half or full lease) and you are also paying for
the care and board of the horse, not just paying to ride it. So if you only
ride 2 weeks out of 4, you still pay for the month, because you are paying
for the horse and not just the privilege to ride.
Ok, I am going to look at a show horse to lease in a few days. I am really
excited! I have been riding for about 9 years. I have seen the horse at my
barn a few times and at shows and have decided not to take my trainer to
view him as she knows the horse really well and already said he would be
perfect for me. so I guess it is up to how I feel about him.I was just
wondering if anyone had any tips on what I should do when going to see this
horse.

after day.
Don’t lease a horse who has a barn buddy
Don’t lease a horse who everyone knows is “barn sour”
Don’t sign a contract of any kind.
Don’t pay more than a month of a time.

i’m going to be half leasing over the summer and I already found four
choices to lease but my question is should I buy a saddle? i’m paying for a
bridle and my mom said she would help me pay for a saddle if I wanted one
so I don’t know what to do if I should buy one or not.
Maybe try asking for a few months of leasing this Christmas.

Well, it all depends on whether or not you have any options – if the owner
of whichever horse you choose has a saddle she’ll let you use, definitely
use it! Or you could ask around & see if a friend has a saddle you can
borrow on whichever days you’re planning on riding. If all else fails I’m
sure you can find a lightly used consignment saddle for a lot better price
than a brand-new one 🙂 good luck with the lease!
