With little in the method of business statements or economic data, and with lots of traders taking the time off, volume was dull. The Nasdaq increased 0.8 %, the S&P 500 got 0.5 %, and the Dow Jones industrial average climbed up 0.3 % in the stock market today.

Dow ekes out gain for 37th record close of 2014
Investors covered up the trading day early, with both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market closing at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. The marketplaces will remain closed Thursday for Christmas Day and will reopen Friday with regular hours.
