An increasing number of people are starting to hate Russia because they
never learned that Russia is not the same as Putin, writes specialist on
Soviet and post Soviet studies, Professor Robert van Voren, who teaches in
Kaunus, Lithouania and Tbilisi, Georgia .
After 35 years of involvement in Soviet and Russian affairs, I am still
amazed, astonished, dismayed and angry.
I know that normal logic does not work in Russia. I know that a
relationship with Russia can only be a love-hate relationship. I know that
Russian nature is ruthless, that Russian history is full of brutal
repression of dissidents, mass murder and the glorification of brutal and
dictatorial rulers. I know that Moscow is a showcase of vulgar
extravaganza, and I know that an endless sea of poverty starts outside
Moscow. I also know that the country is a cesspool of abject alcoholism,
resulting in genetic degradation, and sometimes leading to collective
imbecility.
But I also know that it is a country with a hospitality which is second to
none, which survive the magic power and where people keep smiling despite
the desperate situations they sometimes or often find.
It takes enormous effort to keep saying the same thing all the time:
“Russia is not the same as Putin.”
But still I do not understand is how a nation can be so actively dooing
everything so that its biggest problem is continiously fed: the idea that
the whole world is against them, does not understand them, does not treat
them like equals, or just simply hates them.

What Russia does today, while it goes the same way as Adolf Hitler’s Nazi
Germany in a display of power and war-suicide, confirms that Russia feeds
its own frustration.
And therefore, for me, it takes enormous effort to keep saying the same

I see the posts of my Russian Facebook “friends” of whom an increasing
number expresses silent or noisy support for Putin. I get sick more times
per day. An increasing number of people understand that the unrest in
Eastern Ukraine is caused by false “patriots” who carry out Moscow’s
instructions. An increasing number of people understand that Putin and his
cronies are a criminal state that Russia considers its own mafia territory.
An increasing number of people also understand that Putin and his gang
members destroy the security system, which for decades has ensured peace in
most of Europe.
And an increasing number of people begin to hate Russians Russia They do so
because they never developed this ‘love-hate relationship’ with the country
They have never developed the notion that Russia is not Putin. To them he’s
just a nasty dictator who does to land grab and supported by a population
that prefers to keep her mouth shut and refuses to stand up against a
criminal regime revolt. They have become enemies of Russia.
But the big question is: why are Russians the worst enemy of themselves?
